Lucknow Probable Playing XI

Introduced in the 2022 season alongside the Gujarat franchise, Lucknow Super Giants quickly made their mark in the Indian T20 League. Right from their inaugural season and into the 2023 edition, LSG displayed consistent and impressive cricket, managing to secure places in the playoffs both times. Despite their strong showings, their journey was halted in the Eliminator in both seasons.

Heading into the 2024 auction, LSG enhanced their squad by acquiring notable players such as Shivam Mavi, Arshin Kulkarni, M. Siddharth, Ashton Turner, David Willey, and Mohd. Arshad Khan. These targeted signings aim to strengthen their squad in specific areas, setting the stage for a robust performance in the upcoming season.

At FanCraze, we take a look at LSG’s probable playing XI for the 2024 edition:

Devdutt Padikkal

The trade of Devdutt Padikkal from Rajasthan Royals by LSG is a calculated move, especially with plans for KL Rahul to bat in the middle order ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. Padikkal's exceptional form in domestic tournaments like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy along with his impressive Test debut against England where he hit a remarkable fifty shows his brilliance as an opener. His tenure at Royal Challengers Bangalore highlighted his potential at the top of the order, making him an ideal candidate to open for LSG.

Quinton de Kock (WK)

South African wicketkeeper-batsman, Quinton de Kock, is expected to unleash his aggressive batting to propel Lucknow forward in the competition. As one of the most seasoned players in the squad, his role at the top alongside Padikkal will be vital for giving the team a flying start.

Deepak Hooda/ Ayush Badoni

Deepak Hooda’s performance in the 2023 season was underwhelming, with a disappointing return of 84 runs in 12 matches. Despite this, LSG has shown faith in retaining him, looking forward to him rediscovering his form, evidenced by his robust performance in the 2023-24 Vijay Hazare Trophy where he scored 480 runs across eight innings.

On the other hand, Ayush Badoni, who made his mark in the 2023 season with 238 runs in 15 matches, serves as a solid backup to Hooda.

KL Rahul (C)

As the captain, KL Rahul's role will be crucial in anchoring the innings and setting a platform for the hitters in the lineup. Following criticism for his cautious approach in the past season, Rahul will aim to adopt a more aggressive strategy in 2024. His recent form in international cricket, post-recovery from a thigh injury, promises to boost the morale of LSG fans and contribute significantly to the team’s aspirations for the title.

Nicholas Pooran

Following an outstanding 2023 season, Nicholas Pooran has cemented his place as a key player for LSG, particularly for his power-hitting capabilities. His performance, including a memorable 62 off 19 balls against RCB, set high expectations for him to continue his role as a dynamic finisher in the 2024 season.

Marcus Stoinis

Australian all-rounder, Marcus Stoinis, emerged as a standout performer for LSG in the 2023 season, becoming the team's top run-scorer. While his batting was remarkable, LSG will also be looking for significant contributions with the ball from him in the upcoming season.

Krunal Pandya

Taking over as captain in Rahul's absence during the 2023 season, Krunal Pandya faced challenges, including a crucial defeat in the eliminator. His all-round statistics from the last season reflect room for improvement, which he will aim to address in 2024 to help his team advance further in the competition.

Naveen-ul-Haq/ David Willey/ Shamar Joseph

Naveen-ul-Haq emerged as a vital component of the bowling attack in the last season, capturing 11 wickets across 8 matches at an impressive average of 19.91 and an economy rate of 7.82. With Mark Wood ruled out, Naveen’s skill in swinging the new ball and executing yorkers in the death overs positions him as a reliable leader of the pace attack for LSG.

With his proficiency in swinging the new ball, David Willey adds depth to LSG's bowling arsenal. His experience from 11 matches, where he has taken 6 wickets at an economy of 7.56, shows his ability to contribute effectively in the powerplay overs. Besides his bowling, Willey's capabilities with the bat down the order cannot be overlooked, providing LSG with a valuable all-rounder option.

Emerging as a notable talent after his significant contribution to the recent Test victory against Australia at The Gabba, Shamar Joseph was a last-minute addition to the LSG squad, stepping in for the injured Mark Wood. Joseph's ability to deliver quick balls and swing them effectively adds strength to LSG's pace attack. His inclusion introduces a dynamic option in the pace department for the team.

Shivam Mavi

Transitioning from Gujarat Titans without playing opportunities in 2023, Shivam Mavi was acquired by LSG at the 2024 auction. His understanding of the Lucknow pitch, thanks to his domestic cricket experience with Uttar Pradesh, makes him an asset for home matches.

Ravi Bishnoi

At the forefront of LSG's spin attack, Ravi Bishnoi's role will be crucial, especially on spin-friendly surfaces. With 29 wickets in 29 matches at an economy of 8.10, Bishnoi has already established himself as a key player for Lucknow. His ability to take crucial wickets while maintaining control will be essential for LSG's bowling strategy in 2024.

Mohsin Khan/ Yash Thakur

Despite limited appearances in the last season due to a shoulder injury, Mohsin Khan's performance, particularly his clutch over against Mumbai Indians, highlighted his potential. With a successful outing in the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, taking 11 wickets in five matches at an economy of 5.84, Mohsin is expected to significantly bolster LSG's fast bowling.

Yash Thakur, who made his mark in his debut season last year, appeared in 9 matches and secured 13 wickets at an impressive average of 22.23 and an economy rate of 9.08. His knack for taking wickets makes him a valuable asset as a potential backup for Mohsin Khan, should there be any dip in form or injury concerns.
